Bishop Abraham D. Mattam Passed away


Mar. Abraham D. Mattam VC (96), the first bishop of the Satna Diocese, was called to the eternal rest at 10:10 am on April 16, 2019 at Vincentian Generalate, Edappally. The mortal remains of the Bishop will be taken to the Vincentian Generalate Edappally on April 22, Monday by 08:30 am and would be kept there to pay homage. The requiem Holy Mass and the funeral service which will be officiated by His Beatitude Mar George Cardinal Alencherry, the Major Archbishop of the Syro Malabar Church along with other Bishops and priests begins at 03:00 pm at the Vincentian Generalate Chapel.  As many as 19 bishops and 100 priests concelebrated the Holy Mass. After the prayer service at the Generalate, the body was taken to St. Vincent’s Cathedral Church, Satna Diocese. The funeral service was taken place on 24th April, Wednesday at 9.30 am and the mortal remains of the Bishop laid to rest at the St. Vincent’s Cathedral.

Bishop Abraham Mattam was born on 21 November 1922 at Melampara, in the parish of Narianganam in the eparchy of Palai. After his primary education at Narianganam and Melampara and Middle and High School education at St. Mary's High School, Bharananganam, he joined the Vincentian Congregation on 17 January 1941. After his priestly formation at the Archdiocesan Minor Seminary, Ernakulam and St. Joseph's Major Seminary, Alwaye, he was ordained priest on 15 March 1950. He obtained his doctorate in philosophy from the Gregorian University, Rome in 1958. He held many offices in the Congregation such as Rector of Vincentian Minor Seminary, Angamaly; Rector of Vincentian Vidhyabhavan, Alwaye; Superior of Vincentian House, Thodupuzha; General Councillor and served as Parish Priest in Nadel Church at Vaikom, etc. He was also a visiting professor at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalapuzha from 1966 onwards. He was nominated Apostolic Exarch of Satna on 29 July 1968 and was installed on 9 January 1969. He was appointed Bishop of Satna on 26 February 1977 and was ordained bishop on 30 April 1977. He retired from the office of the Bishop of Satna on 14 January 2000, but continued as administrator of the diocese until 12 April 2000. He had been taking rest in Vincentian Generalate, Edappally. He had authored many books on Syro Malabar heritage and liturgy.
