HISTORY AND PRESENT ACTIVITIES
The history of the Vincentian Ashram, Meerganj, began with the arrival of Rev. Fr. Paul Velamparambil, VC on 9th September 1997. He started staying here in a rented house. The blessing of the house took place on 15th September 1997 by Rt. Rev. Bishop Antony Fernandes of Bareilly diocese in the presence of Very Rev. Fr. Varghese Naickomparambil, the Provincial, and many Fathers and Sisters from U.P. In the month of July 1998 a plot of land was purchased for the construction of our house and mission. Lay out for the house was done on 22nd January 1999. On 30th January, the foundation stone was laid by Rt. Rev. Bishop Antony Fernandes, bishop of Bareilly. On 2nd October 1999 the Ashram and the Church and the F.C. Convent were blessed by Rt. Rev. Bishop Antony Fernandes in the presence of Very Rev. Fr. Varghese Naickomparambil, the Provincial.
On 25th June 2000 the director of Popular Mission of St. Thomas province was appointed here. Later the centre flourished as a full-fledged Popular Mission Centre of St. Thomas Province. On 5th February 2010, foundation stone was laid for the construction of a multi-purpose hall. Hundreds of people used to come for regular retreats, adoration, Night Vigils and the Fathers were regularly engaged in Popular Mission Retreats all over North India.
Since we get good vocations from North and North-East India the Provincial Administration had to think about forming the candidates in North itself. Meerganj Ashram was found suitable for the purpose. The inauguration of the seminary was done by Very Rev. Fr. Mathew Vattakuzhy, the Asst. Superior General, on 22nd July. It was blessed by Most Rev. Bp. Antony Fernandes. In 2016, as number of the Novices increased, it necessitated starting a Novitiate House for the Province. The Provincial Administration found Meerganj a suitable place for the same. So the Minor Seminary was shifted to Aonla. Fr. Michael Kareekunnel was appointed Superior and Novice Master in Meerganj on 1st April 2016. The Popular Mission Centre was shifted to Jamshedpur by the end of March 2016. Still we continue Adoration on Fridays (from 2 to 4 pm) and Sundays (after the Sunday mass till 12 o’ clock noon) and Night Vigil on last Saturday of every month from 8.30 p.m. till 5 a.m. next day. Around 50 people come for the adoration and around 100 for the Night Vigil. FCC sisters of Bareilly Province have their formation center for aspirants here.
