Description

HISTORY AND PRESENT ACTIVITIES

The Catholic Church in Uganda, strengthened by the blood of 22 Ugandan martyrs, is the most vibrant catholic community in the whole of African continent. Rev. Fr. Joseph Kuruppamparambil found Uganda as the most fertile soil for his preaching ministry. To make matters better, His Eminence Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala, the then Archbishop of Kampala gave him his unflinching support for the renewal programs that were arranged for priests, religious and the laity. The simple, open and respectful behavior of Ugandans will attract all. Above all, their open mind to receive the word of God really impressed Fr. Kuruppamparambil. So, he made up his mind to make Entebbe as his best base for his spiritual warfare for the whole of East Africa. People on the other hand were ready to make any sacrifice to keep him glued to Uganda only. Thus, Mrs. Margret Kyeyune, offered him a piece of land measuring 40 cents at Entebbe in 2002. The idea of a Vincentian house at Entebbe got momentum with the appointment of Fr. Kuruppamparambil as the priest-in- charge and Fr. Xavier Kochukunnathuparmbil  as the Assistant priest-in-charge on April 15, 2003.

The Vincentian house was built in a prime location at Entebbe, four Kilometers away from the Entebbe international airport, near Lake Victoria. Entebbe, during the colonial time was the seat of the British queen and now it accommodates a chain of beaches and hotels of international standards. The construction work of the house was done under the meticulous supervision of Fr. Xavier Kochukunnathuparmbil, as per the direction of Fr. Kuruppamparambil. And the new Vincentian centenary house was blessed on June 19, 2004 by His Eminence, Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala, the archbishop of Kampala and inaugurated by Very Rev. Fr. Varghese Parappuram, the provincial superior of the Marymatha Province.

Fr. Kuruppamparambil had an ardent devotion to Blessed Virgin Mary. During his spiritual talk, he always insisted on praying and developing special devotion to Blessed Virgin Mary. The plan of building a shrine dedicated to miraculous medal had been locked up in his mind for a long time. His dream was fulfilled when the same was blessed and consecrated on September 8, 2007 by His Grace, Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga the Archbishop of Kampala in the presence of Very. Rev. Fr. James Kallumkal, the Provincial Superior. The construction was completed in record time due to the hard work and commitment shown by Frs. John Rathappilly and Antony Vadakkemury. The Vincentian Prayer Centre Entebbe which has now changed as Vincentian Retreat Centre Entebbe continues its mission to give good news to the people of God through many spiritual exercises.

Devotion to Divine Mercy is growing very fast among the people of Africa. To make it more tangible to the people, a grotto in honor of Divine Mercy was constructed under the guidance and initiative of Rev. Frs. Binu Rathappilly and Santhosh Thekkekkulam and the same was blessed by Very. Rev. Fr. James Kallumkal on March 13, 2009.
