HISTORY AND PRESENT ACTIVITIES
Premagiri is 8 kms away from Kurnool city, on the Vijayawada highway with a beautiful landscape. Bishop Rayappa of Kurnool diocese donated 8.5 acres of land and we bought another 3.5 acres of land here. In March 1998 Very Rev. Fr. James Chelapurath, the Assistant Provincial Superior inaugurated the centre and the Bishop declared it as a new parish. We started a Retreat Centre here and Rev. Fr. Francis Naduviledath was appointed the Parish priest and Director of Retreat Centre.
When we took up this mission from the diocese, there was a shrine in the property. This is a pilgrim centre with a miraculous Marian grotto and people assemble for offering saris as thanksgiving and for the fulfillment of prayer request. This was the vision of late Bishop Rayappa, the Bishop of Kurnool, who bought the land in 1969. With the blessings of Bishop Rayappa, there erected a cross on the top of the hillock in 1969. On every Good Friday the people of the town used to come to the hillock praying way of the cross along with the Bishop, priests and religious. In 1997, the pilgrim centre of Premagiri was started and built the main gate and grotto of Our Lady. Bishop invited Brigitine Sisters too to this parish to assist in parish ministry as well as in the retreat centre.
In the beginning our fathers stayed in KDSSS (Kurnool Diocesan Social Service Society) and looked after the centre. Slowly we put up a small shed with tin sheet and started the retreat. During residential retreats, Brigitine sisters were providing food and accommodation to the retreatants. Residential block for the retreatants was built in 2005. The main retreat hall was blessed on December 12, 2013 and Adoration chapel was blessed on December 14, 2014.
The diocese entrusted us the Premagiri parish with two substations namely, Noothanapally and Gargeypuram bifurcated from cathedral parish Kurnool. In the beginning all the parish activities were conducted in the village chapel at Military colony. A new parish church was built in Premagiri and the solemn blessing of the church and the Pilgrim center took place on 30thAugust 2000. In September 2002, Vincentian house cum presbytery was built and blessed.
