HISTORY AND PRESENT ACTIVITIES
In 1988, Vincentian fathers were invited by Most Rev. Mathew Cheriyankunnel, the then Bishop of Kurnool to work in his diocese. Then Fr. John Kallattil visited Kurnool and the Bishop showed Atmakur parish and the nine acres of land owned by the diocese at Karivena. In the same year Very Rev. Fr. George Manalel, the Superior General, Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Pampackal, the Regional Superior of Marymatha Region and Rev. Fr. Antony Kakkanattu, the mission councilor visited Atmakur and Kurnool Diocese and had discussions with the diocesan authorities. Later, the Congregation signed an agreement with the Diocese. On 10th October 1988, Fr. John Karukappilly and Bro. Cyriac Kunnel arrived in Atmakur to begin our ministry. We purchased five more acres of land adjacent to our land at Karivena. We took up parish and started working.
Rev. Fr. Joseph Pallickamadam built a new and convenient presbytery at Atmakur town. Rev. Fr. Paul Puthuva succeeded Fr. Pallickamadam in 1997. In the same year Andhra was erected as a Mission and Fr. Paul Puthuva was appointed the Mission Superior. The residence of the Mission Superior was considered as the Mission House in the beginning. So Atmakur was the first Mission House. We purchased another plot of land for the parish church and presbytery by the side of Kurnool-Atmakur road. Rev. Fr. Jacob Vattaparambil built the new parish church and was blessed on January 05, 2002. Rev. Fr. Francis Kadavy built the presbytery in the new site and was blessed on March 12, 2004. The old presbytery in Atmakur was vacant for some time. In the year 2004 we started a centre for the physically challenged in Atmakur making use of the old presbytery and Preshitharam sisters were invited to look after the centre. The centre was closed in 2009. In its place a kindergarten was started in 2011. Little Sisters of Christ were invited to look after this centre and they arrived in 2011.
We took over an English Medium School run by a Catholic party through the mediation of Bishop Cheriankunnel of Kurnool diocese. Rev. Fr. Jojo Puthussery was appointed the first principal and bursar of the school. We conducted classes in the same rented building in Atmakur town for one year. Afterwards it was shifted to the parish compound. Taking into account certain inconveniences in running the school there, it was shifted to the land donated by the diocese at Karivena and named it De Paul School. In 1992, Telugu medium school also was started at Karivena. In 1994 except KG section all other sections were transferred to Karivena in the new building built under the supervision of Bro. Thomas Kunnel. In 1998 KG section also was shifted to Karivena. The second floor of the building was constructed by Fr. Jojo Puthusserry.
We started a Boys’ Home for the poor children who study in our school from the villages in 1992. In 1992 Vincentian sisters were invited to Karivena to run a health center and a boarding for girls. The newly constructed Vincentian House was blessed on January 16, 2011.
