01. Minor Seminary (1969)

The General Synaxis of the Vincentian Congregation held in December 1966 decided to send our seminarians after the first year minor seminary course for Pre-degree studies. The Congregation took prompt steps to send them for Pre-degree studies to Bharat Matha College, Thrikkakara from Vincentian Minor Seminary, Angamaly in the academic year 1966-67 onwards. Around this time the Archdiocese of Ernakulam established the Sacred Heart Study House, at Thrikkakara and started sending their seminarians to Bharat Matha College. The General Administration of the Congregation also took the decision to establish our study house near the Bharat Matha College. Archbishop Joseph Parecattil encouraged us to start a study house at Thrikkakara and the college authorities helped us find a suitable plot for the same. Archbishop Joseph Caprio, the then Pro-Nuncio to India, laid the foundation stone for the study house on 20th December 1968 and the construction works started on 13th January 1969. Rev. Fr. Joseph Pamapackal, one of the General Councillors, was in-charge of the Construction. The completed area of the building was blessed on 7th July 1969 and two batches of Pre-degree students started living there. The study house was named “Christu Nivas” and Rev. Fr. Thomas Cheruparambil was appointed its first Rector.

With the passage of time some new facilities were added. It was decided in 1975 to construct a new chapel at Christu Nivas and this project was executed by Rev. Fr. Thomas Njarackal, the then procurator. On 14th March 1976, the newly constructed chapel was blessed by His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Parecattil. During the second term of Rev. Fr. George Kammattil as Provincial Superior, a new kitchen block was constructed. When Fr. James Kallumkal was the Provincial Superior, a new block of bathrooms for the seminarians along with quarters for the domestic staff was constructed.

A notable shift was the change of Pre-degree studies from Bharatha Matha College to private coaching conducted at Sacred Heart Study house. Another shift took place when the Sacred Heart Study House stopped the private coaching and we began our own private coaching. Even at this time a few students interested in Mathematics and Science subjects were sent to Bharatha Matha College. The private coaching conducted at Christu Nivas also did not last long due to the unavailability of teachers for every subject and the difficulty to make up for the vacant hours that occur when teachers take leave. On 12th March 2003, Provincial council after consulting rectors of the minor seminaries decided to shift the Plus two course studies from Christunivas Thrikkakara to Edathotty and Pinakadimi by 2004. Another turn occurred when Plus one and plus two courses were introduced delinking them from colleges. On April 11, 2014 the Provincial Council decided to shift the Post-Plus two course from Thachanpara to Christu Nivas, Thrikkakara and it was introduced in the academic year 2014-2015.
