HISTORY AND PRESENT ACTIVITIES
Rome, the Capital of Italy, is also known as Eternal City. In this Eternal City, Marymatha Province of the Vincentian Congregation has its own House. It is an apartment in the first floor of a six storied flat on the main highway, Via Gregorio VII, with 15 minutes of walking distance from St. Peter’s Square, Vatican.
Rev. Fr. Joseph Kuruppamparambil (Fr. J. K. Bill), planned to have a transit house in Rome, to rest a while on his journeys for preaching retreats in European countries. By making a down payment of a considerable part of the price and taking a loan from bank, he purchased the apartment 172/B2 in Via Gregorio VII. Complying with the regulations of Italian Law, it was registered in the name of Mrs. Joan Gallagher and was entrusted to Adv. Signor Paolo, for maintenance. After some time, he had a change of mind and asked Mrs. Gallagher to sell it. Sometime after the death of Fr. Joseph Kuruppamparambil, Mrs. Gallagher shared the matter with the then Provincial Rev. Fr. James Kallumkal and he in turn asked her not to sell it since it could accommodate our priests doing higher studies in Rome. Contacting Adv. Signor Paolo, Fr. James Kallumkal along with Fr. Jojo Marippattu, who was doing higher studies in Rome, visited the apartment for the first time and found that it is good for the purpose. Mrs. Gallagher agreed to the proposal and the Marymatha Province took up the responsibility to meet slowly the liabilities attached to the apartment. With this understanding, the Province carried out some repair and maintenance works in the apartment. Fr. Jojo Marippattu looked after the furnishing to make it ready to occupy. It was blessed on 14th April, 2009 by Mons. Cherian Kanjirakombil, the then Procurator of the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church at the Apostolic See in Rome, at the presence of the few Vincentian priests, studying and working in Italy.
Fr. Prince Puthanpurackal was appointed the priest-in-charge of the House and he started to live there from 25th April 2009. Later on 3rd October of the same year Fr. John Pullan joined the community. Ever since, this House is utilized as a study House. Rev. Fr. Paul Puthuva, who was elected Provincial Superior of the Marymatha Province on 30th April 2009, settled the liabilities attached to the apartment later. Rev. Fr. Prince Puthanpurackal successfully carried out the responsibility to get the apartment registered in our name by contacting Mrs. Joan Gallagher and Signor Paolo. Rev. Fr. Paul Puthuva, having obtained the necessary permission from the Vicariate of Rome, erected it as a Vincentian House by his decree on 8th March 2011. St. Vincent De Paul is the patron of the House. Fr. Prince Puthanpurackal was appointed as its first Superior.
