To establish a Vincentian house and Popular Mission Retreat Centre in the eparchy of Trichur, was a cherished desire of the Vincentian Congregation. To realize it the then Superior General of the Vincentian Congregation, Very Rev. Fr. George Kammattil, approached Mar Joseph Kundukulam, the Bishop of Trichur. He welcomed the Vincentians to his eparchy. The Congregation bought four acres of land at Potta in the territory of St. Mary’s Forane Church, Chalakudy on July, 31, 1976. Rev. Fr. Jacob Athickal was appointed in charge of the property and the construction works there. Our House and Popular Mission Centre at Potta were built under his leadership. Rev. Fr. George Panackal was appointed the first Director of the Popular Mission Centre. The blessing of Potta Ashram and St. Thomas chapel was done by Mar Joseph Kundukulam, the Bishop of Trichur on 14th May 1978. Thus from 1978 onwards Vincentian Congregation has an official Popular Mission Retreat Centre at Potta.

As a follow up of our Popular Mission Retreat, we stared the residential retreats in Potta in April 1984. Twice a month residential retreats are conducted here. To enkindle the spirit of renewal in the people who attended the Popular Mission Retreats, we began to publish the Vachanolsavam magazine in 1986, under the guidance of Fr. Michael Panachikkal. Now it is being published in seven languages. Inspired by the Spirit of God, in April 1984 we started the daily retreats and prayer services in Potta Ashram under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Mathew Naickomparambil. Since then we continue it every day all through the years. Rev. Fr. Mathew Naickomparambil, the fathers and lay people at Potta Ashram were further moved by the Spirit to conduct conventions. Under the guidance of the Pneuma we started the Potta National Bible Convention in the year 1989. The Lord anoints the Vincentians to proclaim and witness to the Gospel. To integrate both the Kerigmatic and dynamic ministry, under the leadership of late Rev. Fr. George Vazhaplamkudy, the fathers at Potta Ashram started ‘Karunabhavan’ in 1988. It is a home for the poor couples who have no one to look after them. From 2003 onwards the Preshitharam Sisters (CPS) are helping at Karunabhavan. To enkindle Eucharistic devotion in the people of God we started in 2010 under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Mathew Thadathil a Perpetual Adoration Centre. It is a source to burn and illumine the soul and psyche of the faithful who come to Potta Ashram. God blessed us to construct the stations of the ‘Way of the Cross’ to deepen the devotion to the ‘Suffering Servant of Yahweh’ in 2010. As part of the devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary we constructed a ‘Japamala Veedhi’ and Grotto in the same year. And the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Mother was built in 2012. All these events are signs of God’s blessing at Potta to turn it as a wellspring of grace and pilgrim centre.
