HISTORY AND PRESENT ACTIVITIES
It was a dream of Archbishop Thomas Menamparambil, the Archbishop of Guwahati, to start a retreat Centre for the people of Northeast India. This dream was actualized when the Marymatha Province started a centre at Khetri, in Assam in the year 2009. It was Rev. Fr. Johnson Eanthumkuziyil who was sent to Guwahati for the execution of the project. He started our ministry there staying in local parish and was looking out for a plot of land. Later we could buy a plot of land in Khetri, which is 39 kms away from Guwahati. The diocese helped us in finding a suitable plot and also financially assisted us in buying it. The Retreat centre is located on the top of a hill and is spread around 8 acres of land. It had a very humble beginning with lots of hurdles and problems, both from far and near. But the pioneers faced the challenges with undaunted faith and courage.
God’s ways are strange and wonderful. His thoughts are higher than our thoughts and He works everything for our good. Now the circumstances have changed and the Centre is growing day by day and is functioning very well. The serenity of the place provides a conducive atmosphere for prayer. A Pious surrounding is also created by the presence of the rosary mysteries on the way to the centre, the stations of the way of the cross and the word of God written on colored boards.
Continuous intercessory prayers are done in the perpetual Adoration Chapel which can accommodate 40 persons. The cave like chapel which is exclusively meant for silent prayers attracts many souls to contemplation and deep prayers. The beautiful Grotto of the Blessed Virgin Mary draws the people to praying the rosaries in her loving presence. Besides, there is the Grotto of St. Joseph, the patron of the centre, Grotto of St Vincent De Paul and St. Alphonsa and the statue of St. Michael where people pray for protection. There are separate buildings for Gents and Ladies with the capacity to accommodate more than one hundred persons. The first floor of the ladies Building is the auditorium with a space for some two hundred and fifty persons. Preaching is done here.
Every month there are three residential retreats for the different tribes of Northeast like Khasi, Khasi Pnar, Garo, Assamese, Hindi, Bodo, Tiwa, Karbi, English, Nagamese. There are good translators of English into vernaculars and dialect. The number of participants vary from one group to another. Special Retreats for priests and Religious are conducted thrice a year where the participants reach to the maximum. Also special Retreats for groups like Novices, Candidates, Youth, and Catechists are conducted. Friday to Sunday a team of two priests and three sisters go for the outreach programmes in the parishes of North East as per the request of the Parish. The centre extends its services outside the country as well.
