HISTORY AND PRESENT ACTIVITIES
Rev. Fr. Mathew Naikomparambil and team from Potta led a Bible Convention in the year 1992 at Ullhasnagar, Kalyan. More than 10,000 people took part in the convention. The Bombay Malayalees wanted to have follow-up programs of the convention. Fr. Mathew Naickomparambil said that he would try to persuade his superiors to send a priest to begin a prayer centre in Kalyan, provided anybody offers a plot of land. Mr. C.C. Antony responded positively. He purchased three acres of land in Kamba Village, Kalyan West and built a small shed. Rev. Fr. Antony Kolenchery was appointed in-charge of the centre. He built a small chapel and began adoration of the Blessed Sacrament there. The centre was inaugurated on October 7, 1993 with the name Tabor Divine Retreat Ashram. Then he built a small shed which could accommodate about 50 people. He began Prayer services and retreats there and people started to flock to the center. In 1996, Rev. Fr. Mathew Elavumkal was appointed Director and the ashram started to attract many people for prayers and retreats. Bigger halls and residential sheds thatched with coconut leaves were made. In 1998 there erupted a fire that burned the thatched sheds and everything to ashes. But God did not allow complete destruction. Better facilities were again made as sheds and it helped the growth of the centre.
Ten acres of land was bought in Raite village on the banks of river Ullhas in 2002. There a residential building with a bigger preaching hall was built. It was blessed and inaugurated on 6th August 2004 with the name Tabor Bhavan. By this time the ministry in Tabor was extended to different languages. English, Kokani, Malayalam, Special and Growth retreats were shifted to Tabor Bhavan. Hindi, Marathi and Tamil retreats are conducted in Tabor Ashram.
When Rev. Fr. Joshi Kochukudiyattil was the director three more acres of land was bought behind Tabor Ashram. Tabor Ashram is running in a few temporary Asbestos sheds. It is very hot in summer and the sheds leak in many places when it rains. It necessitated the putting up of a good building. Plans for the new buildings were submitted on 15th March 2012 and were approved by the authorities concerned on 25th April 2012. Due to certain reasons, they could not be executed then. On 19th January 2014, Rev. Fr. Paul Puthuva the Provincial Superior of the Marymatha Province laid the foundation stone for the new buildings, when Rev. Fr. Martin Kalamparambil was the Director. There are 9 buildings and one Auditorium in the plan structured according to the slopping nature of the Tabor Mount.
Rev. Frs. Antony Kolenchery, John Cheriavely, Mathew Elavumkal, Joshy Kochukudiyattil, Martin Kalamparabil served as the Directors and Superiors of the Tabor Divine Retreat Ashram. At present Fr. John Kanichery is the Director and Superior.
