HISTORY AND PRESENT ACTIVITIES
Vincentian Mission Centre, Joram is the second centre of Marymatha Province in Arunachal Pradesh in the Diocese of Ittanagar. It will take about 4 hours to reach Joram from our centre in Gumto by bus. It was in the year 2013 that we accepted the invitation of Rt. Rev. Dr. John Thomas, the Bishop of the Diocese of Ittanagar, for Joram Centre. Rev. Fr. Santo Payikkattu was sent to the mission as pioneer in the same year. He moved around the villages to learn the possibility of the mission. The land for the centre was offered to us by the Diocese. There is also a sub-station church called St. Joseph’s Catholic Church close to the land. Staying in the parish he looked after the initial works of the Mission Centre. We began our mission here building a presbytery close to the church. It is named Vincentian Mission Centre and St. Vincent De Paul is its Patron. The blessing and the inauguration of the centre took place on 31st October 2014. From then onwards regular weekday and Sunday Masses are celebrated in the Church. Though it is not a Parish it is independent in administering all the sacraments.
We took up the Mission in Joram with the aim of starting a Retreat Centre. In the context of having another retreat centre in Ittanagar diocese, it was decided to know the response of the people and to study the other needs of the place. At present the centre is concentrating on one day programs. As the people of Arunachal Pradesh is so much taken up with charismatic prayers and fasting programs we take the initiative in organizing such programs in our centre on every Fridays for which 30 to 50 people are regular. Since these are non-residential programs people from far away villages have no option to attend the programs but still people who have their own vehicles come in family or groups.
As it is a Mission Centre an intense concentration is given to the villages as most of the villagers have not even seen the world other than their own villages. Village mission is done touring through the villages as a team. We stay in the village for two to three days catechizing and visiting the families. It helps the people to come to the knowledge and love of God and to know how important it is to have a loving relationship with their neighbors to be closer to God.
