Description

HISTORY AND PRESENT ACTIVITIES

The year 1993 was a marking one both for the Delhi Archdiocese and the Vincentian Congregation. The Bible Convention led by Rev. Fr. Mathew Naickomparampil was attended by more than 15000 people. There was also a retreat for the Priests and Religious of the diocese by the same team, which was attended by nearly 400 of them. This Convention and retreat ignited a thought for a Retreat Centre in the minds of the authorities, since the number of people gathered was really surprising. Rev. Fr. George Kureethara, the then Chancellor and Judicial Vicar of the Archdiocese of Delhi, invited us to begin a retreat centre. With the permission of the Late Archbishop Alan Basil de Lastic, Divine Retreat Ashram was started in Faridabad in the year 1996. Rev. Fr. Kuriakose Punnolil was appointed its first Director. The land for the Retreat Centre was bought in the year 1994 at Faridpur village in Faridabad by Rev. Fr. Antony Thottithara. Being in a too remote place and due to unfavorable conditions for its growth, there was a need for a new plot which was found at Bathola in 1996. The change of land was really a providence of God. With a follow up Convention in the year 1999 conducted by Rev. Fr. Mathew Naickomparambil at DRC Faridabad, the Centre took its strong roots in North India. The Convention which was inaugurated by the then Archbishop Alan Basil de Lastic saw people flocking from different parts of North India.

Rev. Fr. Mathew Naickomparampil laid the foundation stone for the new ashram building, in September 2000. After long struggle and with the generous support of the benefactors and well-wishers finally on 11th March 2005 the new Divine Retreat Ashram building was completed and inaugurated. It was blessed by the then Auxiliary Bishop of Delhi His Excellency Dr. Anil Cutto in the presence of Rev. Fr. George Arackal, the Superior General of the Vincentian Congregation. The Ashram building can accommodate 450 people at a time for residential retreat and the Centre has its own Auditorium, Book stall and other necessary facilities. It is located in Sector 82 of Faridabad City in Haryana and is close to South Delhi. It is only 6 kms away from the railway station and bus stand.

The main services of the Ashram includes the first Saturday Night Vigil in Hindi-Malayalam, Second Saturday convention in Hindi-Malayalam and Students’ one day retreat, Third Saturday English Night Vigil, and Residential Retreat in Hindi, Malayalam and English. Most striking feature of the services here is that people irrespective of caste or creed come and participate. Very specially, the Hindi Retreats and Night Vigils are marked by the presence of more number of local non-Christians. Divine Retreat Ashram publishes the magazine ‘Divine Truth’ every month. The Ashram also undertakes outreach programs wherein the Priests go out and proclaim the Word of God. The outreach programs are undertaken in India as well in foreign countries.
