HISTORY AND PRESENT ACTIVITIES
Mar Vijay Anand Nedumpuram, the Bishop of Chanda Diocese, visited the Provincial House more than once with the request to open a retreat centre in his diocese. The then Provincial Superior Very Rev. Fr. Varghese Parappuram responded positively to his request and told him that the election of the Provincial Administration is due within a year and hence the present administration is not able to execute it. Since the response on the part of the Province was positive, he approached the new Provincial administration with the same request. Very Rev. Fr. James Kallumkal, the then Provincial Superior sent Fr. Varghese Menachery and Fr. Romulus Nedumchalil, the Provincial Councilors for mission and retreats to Ballarpur to meet the diocesan authorities and discuss about the establishment of the retreat centre. It was clear that the purchase of land and construction of the centre would take time. Rev. Fr. Thomas Thekkekara was sent in May 2006 to initiate our ministry there. He stayed in the Bishop’s house and joined for a Marathi course. After completing the course, he was appointed to a parish mission- Warur- as an assistant parish priest.
At the same time he, with the help of the priests of the diocese was searching for a suitable plot of land. When a few plots were available, the Bishop in person along with the Provincial Superior went and saw them, but by one reason or other they were not found suitable. In the course of time we found out a new plot suitable for the retreat center near a junction where two Highways meet. Besides, it was in the town limits and about four km away from Bellharshah railway station. We purchased it in the beginning of the year 2009.
Daily adoration was started in the adoration Chapel of the Cathedral Church. Outreach retreat programs in various parishes and mission centres were being conducted regularly. Most of the people coming for retreats were poor. In March 2010, Fr. Sebastian Thanippallil was appointed as financial officer of the Ashram and our residence was shifted to a temporary building in the land purchased. The construction for the new building was started as per the guidance and financial support from the Province. It was blessed by Mar Vijay Anand Nedumpuram, Bishop of Chanda and was inaugurated by Very Rev. Fr. Paul Puthuva, the Provincial Superior on 2nd March 2011. Regular retreats and prayer services are conducted there.
