HISTORY AND PRESENT ACTIVITIES
The Vincentian Congregation, while thinking about some very beneficial services to the poor, decided to start a care centre for the poor cancer patients coming to the Regional Cancer Centre and Medical College, Trivandrum. In view of that the then Superior General, Rev. Fr. Paul Kariamadom, laid the foundation stone for the new Vincentian House at Kumarapuram, Thiruvananthapuram on 25 May 1989 and it was blessed on the same year on December 14. In April 1991, the new land with a small house was bought for the Cancer care Center. Rev. Fr. Kuriakose Aryankalayil was appointed in-charge of the construction works of the House and Care Centre. The Superior General of the Congregation Rev. Fr. Antony Plackal blessed the Care Centre on 27 May 1993 and it was inaugurated in the presence of the then Provincial superior of Marymatha province, Rev. Fr. George Kammattil and Fr. Paul Kariamadom, the former Superior General. At present there are 60 rooms (42 rooms with 3 beds and common toilet & 18 rooms with 2 beds and attached toilet) in this Centre. Lunch and supper are provided here for the patients and to their bystanders. The centre includes a chapel where Holy Qurbana is celebrated every day at 6.15 am. There is a special prayer service for the sick every evening at 7 PM. Christians as well as people of different faiths take part in this evening prayer. There is a leisure room and a library in the centre which provide TV, news papers, magazines and books useful for the patients.
The ministry of Vincentian Congregation in De Paul Care centre is something really special and which is really touching the lives of the poor people in their pain. The De Paul Care Centre, Trivandrum is an abode of care to many poor cancer patients who are not only struggling with their sickness but also their poverty. Many cancer patients are referred to the Regional Cancer Center, in the Medical College Campus, Thiruvananthapuram from different parts of the country. The patients get treated in the medical college but many of them can barely afford the cost of stay during their treatment. Many lodges and little rooms are made available to the patients outside the medical college but at exorbitant rates which go up to Rs. 500 to 1500 per day! This is where De Paul Care Centre is making a huge impact. Just at Rs 25/- per day including two full meals, this place is a ray of hope for the poor who are battling cancer and other ailments. This place is not self financing. It is running with the support of the Congregation and with the help of generous people around the world. The little contributions make a huge difference for the unfortunate people who are not only battling their ailments but also their poverty.
