HISTORY AND PRESENT ACTIVITIES
When the Vincentian Congregation spread its activities to several states in India, formation of Provinces became a necessity. Along with that the planting of the Administrative Bodies at suitable centers in Kerala also got well planned. The General Chapter held in 1989 decided to shift the Generalate from Angamaly to elsewhere leaving Angamaly campus for the Marymatha Province. Providence has located the new campus near Toll-gate, Edappally in the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese. The burden of fund-raising for the new constructions fell upon the shoulders of Very Rev. Fr. Paul Kariamadam, the Superior General and the direct supervisions on the Finance Councilor Fr. Varghese Chackumkuzhy. They rose to the occasion promptly and played their roles very neatly with the divine help.
His Beatitude Mar Antony Padiyara, the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church invoked the divine Blessings at the laying of the foundation stone on 27th September 1991, our heavenly patron’s feast day. As the building was nearing completion, the four year term of the General Administrative Body got over and the task of the inauguration was passed on to the new Body headed by Very Rev. Fr. Antony Plackal. His Beatitude Antony Padiyara very fondly blessed the new administrative block of the Vincentian Congregation on 17th April 1993 in the presence of Rev. Fr. Paul Kariamadam, the Provincials and the other dignitaries and a large group of well-wishers. We are very grateful to His Beatitude and the very many others for invoking the Divine Blessings upon this institution for which several people and Institutions did contribute with prayers and finance. ‘Paul planted’ and the Antonies watered and the Vincentian Congregation continue to grow doing good to peoples in several continents by their humble apostolic ministries, services and works of mercy. Let’s Bless the Lord!
Other than the general administration of the Congregation, the Vincentian Generalate House is engaged in various activities for the different groups of people around the house. The members of the General Administrative body have established a cordial relationship with the neighbours through regular visits especially the sick and the aged. Whenever neighbours need house blessings, prayers at home, etc, the fathers try to make themselves available for the same. They also participate in the three family units meetings and prayers. The priests here also have cordial relationship with the MLA, municipal chair person, ward members, residential association executive body members, etc. The house superior is regular in attending the ward sabha.
The priests assist the neighbouring parishes whenever the parish priests request their help, especially for confessions, holy Mass, preaching, etc. They are also engaged in offering weekly holy Masses and hearing confessions in the neighbouring convents.
When Fr. Antony Plackal was the Superior General, he arranged a series of talks regarding the social messages in the Sacred Scriptures. Inspired by the social message of the Sacred Scriptures the friends and the well wishers of the Vincentian Generalate were formed into an organisation named, SSSMILE fellowship. SSSMILE means “Sacred Scriptures’ Social Message into living Experience”. They have tried to carry out acts of mercies to the people who were suffering deprivations and marginalisation. Due to their initiative a SSSMILE home was started in Edappally which was eventually shifted to Vettikzuhy and grew into SSSMILE Village. The members of the SSSMILE Executive, meet regularly on 18th of every month or any other convenient date, and reflect on the social messages contained in the bible passages. The committee decides upon the applications of the needy people and help them in their necessities. They have already provided help to hundreds of people as help for treatments, house construction, marriages, education of children, etc. In a meeting of the General Body of the members of SSSMILE fellowship the new Executive Committee members are elected.
We have registered a trust in the name of De Paul Cancer Care Trust in order to help the cancer patients who are very poor. We have already supported the cancer patients, especially from the poorest families. We give them counselling, prayer support and a small amount of Rs. 5000/- when we find that they deserve. We have already supported 830 cancer patients within a period of three years after starting the Trust. Applications from deserving cancer patients are coming more and more and we are unable to support all of them. Ninety nine percent of the patients who have received our support belong to the category of the poorest of the poor. These patients are also requested to pray for all the cancer patients especially for the 830 patients whom we have already helped. We have also started giving cancer awareness to the patients or their relatives who come to us. Besides we have also started cancer awareness classes for general public so that they can prevent the incidence of cancer. We also arrange cancer detection camps in order to detect the disease early and treat them well in advance.
